Yeo Wi-Jack

Maintenance Planner, working onshore in Shekou in China in the operations team for the deepwater semi-submersible rig West Hercules drilling for Husky Oil off China

Why did you join Seadrill?
Seadrill is a dynamically growing company which has many offices around the world. The company gives me the opportunity to develop myself in many respects.

What opportunities and challenges have you had in Seadrill?
I started off new in this industry in operations preparations. The challenges for me were to learn on the job from my fellow experienced colleagues and pick up the necessary skills to perform my duties. It was quite difficult in the beginning but my fellow colleagues were very patient and willing to work at my pace which was obviously the slowest within the team. After operations preparations, I joined the West Hercules operations team in China. I had a head-start in the team since I was already working on the preparations phase in Singapore. However, I had to build up my technical knowledge since this is a new job-scope and I had to learn faster since operations moves at a faster pace than operations preparations. The Chinese culture and way of working are also something I have had to adapt to. Every day is a learning process for me, even today after spending almost two years working in China.

Anything you specifically enjoy?
I enjoy being in Shekou, Shenzhen, China on my first overseas assignment with the company. It gives me the opportunity to see what China is like and how the Chinese people work. China is a fast-growing country and working in China allows me to see how China will develop over time. One thing is for sure, China is really developing fast.
