Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD)
Seadrill is a leader in Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), having drilled over 100 MPD wells globally. MPD enables precise control of the annular pressure profile, delivering safer, more efficient drilling and better reservoir management in diverse conditions. We now have nine rigs equipped with MPD capabilities and one with Controlled Mud Level (CML) capabilities. In partnership with Oil States, we have implemented their award-winning Integrated Riser Joint (IRJ) system—simplifying deployment, reducing rig-up time, and enhancing safety and reliability. This breakthrough will become the standard across every rig we operate, giving our clients a distinct competitive advantage through improved efficiency, reduced non-productive time, and the capability to execute the most complex well environments.

As part of Seadrill’s advanced MPD package, the IRJ cuts rig-up time by over 50% and is 100% deck-testable—streamlining deployment, boosting safety, and reducing non-productive time for our customers. Pictured here is the deployment of the IRJ on the West Polaris drillship.
The IRJ is a key element of a standard industry MPD package. It features a retrievable cassette containing two independent packer seals and a passive Rotating Control Device (RCD) bearing—both run and pulled within a hard-faced bore. This configuration streamlines deployment, enhances reliability, and significantly improves overall drilling efficiency.
Seadrill pairs advanced MPD technology with highly trained crews. At our Seadrill Academy in Dubai, our newly launched, in-house MPD training program uses state-of-the-art immersive simulation to equip crews with the skills, teamwork, and decision-making skills needed for safe, efficient operations.
