Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD)
Seadrill is an expert in Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) and has drilled over 100 MPD wells globally. MPD is an advanced drilling technique used to precisely control the annular pressure profile throughout the wellbore. Historically used in only the highest-complexity wells, Seadrill is applying this technology widely. Our experienced teams are achieving increased efficiency, enhanced safety and improved reservoir management for our clients in a wide range of conditions. We oversee the entirety of MPD system operations and maintenance, ensuring seamless management from inception to completion. By the end of first quarter 2025, we will have equipped nine rigs with MPD capabilities and one with Continuous Mud Level (CML) drilling capabilities, strengthening our standing as a frontrunner in the industry.

A typical Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) system contains four manifolds (buffer, choke, metering and distribution) that are used to control pressure throughout operations. Pictured here are the manifolds on the West Tellus drillship.
On the West Tellus drillship, Seadrill crew members safely oversee installation of the Integrated Riser Joint (IRJ). The IRJ enables efficient wellbore pressure control and flow management during deepwater drilling operations.

On MPD systems across the Seadrill fleet, we are working with our partners to place sensors on bearing assemblies. This will deliver real-time pressure, temperature, and flow rate data to the surface, allowing the drilling team to make informed decisions and adjust drilling parameters.
